A modern classic built for coastal cruising.

Launched in 2016 by Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway, Artemis is a 31-foot gaff-rigged wooden sloop designed by Nat Benjamin. With her canoe stern, sweeping sheer, and distinctive green topsides, she blends timeless craftsmanship with thoughtful, modern usability. Built for easy handling and long days on the water, she is as practical as she is beautiful - equally at home daysailing or cruising the New England coast.

The BOAT

Artemis was designed as a larger evolution of earlier Gannon & Benjamin sloops - offering more interior comfort while maintaining the elegance and performance of a traditional wooden vessel.

She measures just over 31 feet on deck and features a gaff sloop rig with a self-tending, roller-furling jib for effortless sail handling. Her canoe stern and balanced hull allow her to move easily through chop while remaining responsive and stable under sail.

Designed for versatility, Artemis is ideal for coastal cruising - from Vineyard waters to Maine and beyond - while remaining manageable for a small crew.

The BUILD

Constructed plank-on-frame using traditional methods, Artemis reflects the precision and artistry of the Gannon & Benjamin yard. Every detail - from her lofted lines to her finished joinery - was approached as part of a cohesive whole.

Her design emphasizes:

  • Classic proportions and clean lines

  • Durable, sea-kindly construction

  • A cockpit designed for comfort and function

  • A hull that performs confidently in varied conditions

The result is a vessel that feels both enduring and alive - built without shortcuts and intended to last generations.

The INTERIOR

Below deck, Artemis features a warm, natural wood interior that balances simplicity with comfort.

The layout includes:

  • Sleeping accommodations for four

  • An enclosed head

  • A functional galley

  • Custom-fitted cushions and mattresses

Every element was designed to create a space that feels inviting and practical - equally suited for overnight trips or extended cruising.

The SAILS & SYSTEMS

The sail plan was developed in collaboration with Sperry Sails to complement the boat’s traditional form while maximizing ease of use.

Rig & Sail Details

  • Gaff-rigged mainsail with natural Dacron cloth

  • Cross-cut panel construction for durability

  • Roller-furling, club-footed jib for single-handed handling

  • Carefully integrated battens and hardware for performance and longevity

The goal was to create a sail system that:

  • Honors the boat’s classic aesthetic

  • Can be handled by one person

  • Performs reliably across changing New England conditions
